Montverde, Fla.— The Montverde Academy baseball defeated Foundation Academy 12-1 via the 10-run mercy rule at Lindor Field on Thursday night to improve to 2-0 this spring.
The Eagles scored at least one run in each inning en route to leading from start to finish. MVA scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before scoring another four in the bottom of the second to lead 5-0 after two. The Eagles went ahead 6-0 after another run in the bottom of the third. But the visiting Lions broke up the shutout via a solo home run by Braden Holcomb to make the score 6-1 after three and a half innings.
MVA answered with six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-1 lead. Anthony Cole blasted a grand slam home run to cap the six-run frame and put the Eagles up 11 runs.
Overall, MVA amassed 11 hits and were led by AJ Goytia who went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a stolen base, three runs and a run batted in. Salvador Alvarez went 2-for-2 with a run and three runs batted in, while Cole went 1-for-2 with four runs batted in via the grand slam.
Brian Ehrlich earned the win after pitching four innings and allowing a run on two hits while striking out five. Oscar Hernandez pitched one shutout inning of relief to close out the game.
MVA returns to action next Tuesday for a game at Lake Nona High School at 7:00 pm.
