NCAA/NAIA Eligibility
Information for College Bound Student-Athletes
At Montverde Academy, student-athletes who are interested in playing collegiate athletics must work both in the classroom and on the field or the court. Students must not only qualify athletically for recruitment onto a college or university team; they must also qualify academically.
Â
One of the prevailing myths is that there are full ride scholarships for everyone. Having excellent grades can lead to potential academic scholarships to assist when a student gets a partial athletic scholarship.
In order to play Division I or Division II college athletics, high school students must meet first-year eligibility requirements. The NCAA is the organization that determines if a student meets the eligibility criteria. Students become eligible if they meet the standards set forth in the following areas: high school academic record (approved courses and GPA), ACT/SAT scores, and qualify as an amateur. Students who wish to participate in Division I or II athletics should prepare to meet eligibility requirements as they begin high school, and should register online at the NCAA Eligibility Center during junior year of high school.
Below are some links to websites and documents, which will provide you with a great deal of information. Please do not feel like you need to become an expert. Montverde Academy is unique in that college placement and athletic coaches work closely together as a team to help your student-athlete move toward success at the next level.

- The NCAA allows a recruit to make only five visits to Division I schools, limited to one per school. Official visits to DII and DIII schools are also limited to one per school, but there is no limit on total amount of visits.Â
Â
- The school can pay for the following for you and your parents/guardians: transportation to and from the campus, lodging throughout your visit, three meals per day and three tickets to a home sports event.
Â
- Schools may pay for a recruit’s transportation to and from campus. However, they can only provide transportation for parent/guardians if they travel in the same car as the recruit. Flights and separate bus or train tickets may not be purchased for parents.
Â
- At all levels, recruits can take only one official visit per school.
Â
- Each official visit may be up to 48 hours long, or the span of one weekend.
Â
- D1 men’s ice hockey recruits can begin taking official visits as early as January 1 of their sophomore year in high school.
Â
- D1 football recruits can begin taking official visits starting April 1 of their junior year of high school.
Â
- D1 women’s basketball recruits may begin taking official visits in April of their junior year of high school, beginning the Thursday following the Women’s Final Four tournament.
Â
- D1 lacrosse, softball and baseball recruits may begin taking official visits September 1 of their junior year of high school.
Â
- Due to a rule update by the NCAA, effective May 1, 2019, official visits for all other DI sports can begin August 1 before the athlete’s junior year of high school. For almost all sports, this bumps up the official visit date.
Â
- Official visits are not allowed to occur during recruiting dead periods.
