The Montverde Academy boys' basketball team won its unprecedented sixth GEICO High School Nationals championship on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles defeated Link Academy in the championship game, 60-49, to claim the prize once again in 2022.
The Eagles were led by Dillon Mitchell with 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds. He was one of four starters to score in double figures as Dariq Whitehead and Mailk Reneau added 14 each and Kwame Evans had 11. Reneau, like Mitchell, had a double-double with 12 rebounds for a team co-high. Whitehead added six assists and four rebounds.
The Eagles led most of the way and led by as much as 13 when they led 26-13 with 4:26 to go in the second quarter. Link Academy had pulled to within two and were down 49-47 with 5:05 remaining. But MVA closed out the final five minutes outscoring Link Academy 11-2 to secure the win.
The win is now the second consecutive GEICO High School Nationals win for the Eagles. They have now won the tournament in 2013, '14, '15, '18, '21 and now in 2022.
