Montverde, Fla.— After winning the 2022 Florida High School Athletic Association district championship, the Montverde Academy beach volleyball team has advanced into the regional play-in game. The Eagles will compete against Hagerty High School on Monday, May 2 at 1:30 pm.
The Eagles qualified for the regional play-in after winning both matches in the district tournament. MVA, who was the No. 2 seed in the district tournament, defeated No. 3 Apopka High School, 3-0, in the semifinal round on April 26, before beating top seeded West Orange High School 3-0 in the championship round. The win over West Orange was an especial one after losing to the Warriors 3-2 both times during the regular season.
In Tuesday's quarterfinal round win over Apopka, Gracie McClain and Thalita Marangon teamed as pair one to win 21-13 and 21-8. Then on court two, Sabrina Oncins and Gianna Carrasco teamed to a 21-10, 21-10 win. The third pair of Luiza Manata and Sofia Negron earned a 21-15, 21-13 win to seal the team victory.
In Wednesday's championship, pairs number four and five started the match, and the fifth pair of Jadyn Langley and Rosabella Palanti teamed for a 21-7, 21-10 win, while the fourth pair of Catherine Emilcar and Luiza Tanaka-Aranda won 21-14, 21-16. Then when the top three pairs squared off, the team of Manata and Negron won 21-9, 21-10 to solidify the championship.
Overall, the MVA beach volleyball team is 11-5 this season and having secured not only their first FHSAA district championship, but on April 20 won the inaugural Citrus League beach volleyball championship. Manata has the best winning percentage this season, with a 13-3 record, having won matches with three different partners at least once.
The Eagles' opponent, Hagerty High School, enters the regional play-in game with a 12-0 overall record. If the Eagles defeat Hagerty, they will compete in the state championship series in Tallahassee on the campus of Florida State University starting on Friday, May 6 at 10:00 am against either Lake Mary High School or Orangewood Christian.
