The Montverde Academy softball team, behind aggressive baserunning in the bottom of the seventh inning, defeated Trinity Prep 2-1 in the semifinal round of the Florida High School Athletic Association district championship on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles won via walk-off for the third time this season. With the score tied at 1-1 and Yani Guzman on first after drawing a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh inning, the Trinity Prep pitcher, threw a wild pitch while facing Eva Rivera. Guzman who was running on the pitch easily advanced to second, then attempted to go to third. The throw to third by the Trinity Prep catcher was thrown wild, allowing Guzman to score to give the Eagles the walk-off win.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 16-8 overall this season and advance to the championship game of the district on Thursday where will host Windermere Prep at 7:00 pm. Windermere Prep won earlier in the day 2-1 via walk-off as well.
In Tuesday's win, the Eagles had two hits, including one by Danika Spinogatti and one by Colby Reish. Guzman scored the winning run, while the other Eagles run was scored by Jenna Meder in the bottom of the fourth inning on a squeeze bunt by Guzman.
Emerson Gunkel earned the win in relief going 2.0 innings and allowing no runs on no hits, while striking out one. Faith Fournier pitched the first five innings and allowing one (unearned) run on two hits.
