Montverde, Fla.— Montverde Academy girls' track & field star Michelle Smith '24 and recent track & field alum Javonya Valcourt will test their skills on a grand stage as the two will be amongst the athletes competing at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2022 in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, August 1-6.

Smith will represent her native country United States Virgin Islands, while Valcourt will represent the Bahamas.

Smith will compete in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles, while Valcourt will compete in the 400 meter dash as well as the 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 meter relay.

Both student-athletes are coming off tremendous seasons for Montverde Academy in 2022, as they helped the Eagles to the district and regional championship and a solid second place finish at the state championship meet.

Smith was undefeated this season in the 300 meter hurdles. She won that event in the FHSAA State Championship meet (41.56), regional championship meet (41.90), district championship meet (43.95), Florida State Relays meet (42.30), Citrus League Championship (44.66) and the Louie Bing Invitational (41.86).

Valcourt earned eight overall wins this season, including four individual races and four as a part of a relay team. She won the FHSAA State Championship in the 400 meters (55.33) and also won that race at regionals (55.92) and districts (57.04). She also helped MVA to a first place finish in the 4 x 400 at districts (3:59.82).
