Montverde, Fla. (6/28/2023)— Montverde Academy Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Matt Shewmake as the next girls' head basketball coach.
Shewmake has a strong basketball background and brings a wealth of successful coaching experience to the Eagles. His most recent appointment has been as head girls' basketball coach with The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee for the past three seasons. In those three seasons, he led the Feet to a 91-11 overall record including three consecutive Tennessee state championships and two national top 10 rankings. In addition to that, he helped one player earn McDonald's All-American and TSSAA Miss Basketball, along with six players being named to the All-Tennessee state team.
Prior to that, Shewmake was associate head coach for two years at University of California Riverside where he coached the conference's leading scorer and helped the team earn victories over three of the top teams in the league. Before that, he served as associate head coach for one year at Northwest Florida State, where he helped lead the Raiders to two NJCAA Elite 8 appearances and a Panhandle Conference championship.
Shewmake has also had coaching appointments in an assistant role with California State Fullerton, Middle Tennessee State and Virginia Commonwealth University.
In all, Shewmake has coached nine McDonald's All-American players.
Shewmake will be taking over for a Montverde Academy girls' basketball team that is coming off of back-to-back GEICO High School Nationals championships and finished with an all-time program best 26-1 overall record last season.
