Track & Field Wins Several National Championships

Several members of the Montverde Academy track & field team, solidified themselves as all-time greats this weekend as the Eagles earned two national championships at the New Balance National Outdoor championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from June 14 - 17, 2024.

On Sunday, in the girls 4 x 400 relay, the team of Nakira Hudson, Skyler Franklin, Dasia Reed and Alivia Williams not only won the national championship, but captured gold in a time of 3:31.68 to set a new national high school outdoor record, shattering the previous record of 3:35.17 (a 3.49 second difference).

The Eagles' 4 x 400 relay team has been unstoppable all year. They not only won the national outdoor championship, but also the indoor championship back in March. MVA also won the 4 x 400 relay numerous times during the outdoor high school season, including the state championship on May 16.

Additionally this weekend, on Saturday, Williams, competing under the Montverde Academy name one final time, solidified herself as one of the all-time greats in Montverde Academy girls track & field history. The University of Iowa commit won the national championship in the 400 meter dash in a winning time of 52.99 seconds.

The win was fitting for Williams who owned the 400 meter distance all year long during the high school outdoor season. She was a perfect 6-for-6 in the high school outdoor meets, which included wins at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state, regional and district championships.

While the wins were impressive, the Eagles also captured top three finishes in several other events at the prominent national championship meet.

In the girls 100 meters, reigning Gatorade Florida Player of the Year Adaejah Hodge, in just her second week back from injury, earned a third place finish in 11.51 seconds. In the 200 meters, the Eagles finished second and third as Franklin earned a silver in a time of 23.00 seconds, while Hodge was right behind in 23.01 seconds.

In the boys pole vault,two-time state champion Alex Georgiev closed out a marvelous high school career at MVA by finishing a hard fought third with a height of 4.90 meters.
