For the fourth edition of the Senior Spotlight, Sports Media student Kendall Payne speaks with baseball player Raja Sandhu. Raja is part of the MVA baseball team where he has made an impact on his teammates on the diamond and in the classroom. This year, Raja is back on the diamond after missing last season with an injury.

Montverde Academy's baseball program remains focused and competitive and senior pitcher Raja Sandhu has been a key part of that. With a calm presence on the mound and a team-first mindset, Raja's leadership and resilience have defined his senior year.

Raja's love for the game started early, being born into family who was involved in the sport at the highest level.

"I first started playing baseball around four years old," he shared. "I got drawn to the sport from my dad. He was a pitcher just like me and he played college baseball at Florida State and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers."

Following in his father's footsteps, Raja developed not only the mechanics of pitching but also a deep understanding of the game's discipline and mental toughness.

His journey at Montverde Academy began with excitement and ambition.

"When I came to the school my freshman year I was very excited to get a good education and continue my baseball journey," he said.

But adversity struck during his junior season when he suffered a torn labrum, forcing him to miss his entire eleventh grade season. Instead of letting the setback define him, Raja attacked his recovery with determination, spending last summer rebuilding his strength and preparing for a comeback for his senior year.

As a senior, Raja embraces the responsibility that comes with experience.

"I want to try to be a good role model for the younger kids as well as trying to keep the attitude and morale of the team constantly up," he explained. "We are very close as a team this year. We all seem to play well and have great energy together, which is causing us to win games and continue our success."

That positive mindset, much in which has to do with his leadership, has helped fuel what he believes makes this team special.

Raja credits Montverde Academy for helping shape him both on and off the field.

"Montverde Academy has prepared me for the next level both academically and athletically," Raja said. "The coaching staff and the baseball program have helped me grow as a baseball player and a person. I have also learned a lot through great teachers."

Looking ahead, Raja plans to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level while studying sports medicine.

Through it all, one person has remained his biggest influence is his dad.

"My dad has had the biggest impact on my baseball career. He has been by my side my whole life supporting me and teaching me. He has allowed me to become a better baseball player throughout the years as well as becoming the person I am today."

From early lessons in the backyard to leading on the mound for Montverde Academy, Raja Sandhu's story is one of perseverance, growth, and gratitude. As graduation approaches, his resilience and leadership will leave a lasting footprint on the Montverde Academy baseball program.
