From Montverde to the First Pick: The Journey of Hamady Diop
For Hamady Diop, growth came early.
Leaving home at a young age to pursue soccer in the United States, he joined Montverde Academy and the SIMA program, where the environment demanded maturity, resilience, and daily commitment.
"The physicality of the sessions and being away from family at a young age made me grow faster," Diop reflected.
Built Through Challenge
At SIMA, the training environment pushed players both physically and mentally. The intensity of the sessions required consistency, discipline, and the ability to compete every day. For Diop, adapting to that environment while living away from family helped accelerate his development both on and off the field.
The lessons learned during those years would prove critical as he prepared for the next stage of his career.
Success at Clemson
Diop continued his development at Clemson University, where he became a three-year starter for one of the top programs in the country. Over the course of his collegiate career, he made 42 appearances, starting 40 matches while scoring seven goals and adding three assists.
His performances quickly earned recognition. During the 2020 season, Diop was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team, the All-ACC Second Team, and the TopDrawer Soccer Top 100 Freshman list, establishing himself as one of the most promising young defenders in college soccer.
A Historic Draft Moment
Ahead of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, Diop signed a Generation adidas contract with Major League Soccer, a move reserved for the top prospects entering the league.
On December 21, 2022, he was selected first overall by Charlotte FC, becoming the second Clemson player to be drafted first overall and the first Senegalese player ever taken with the top pick in MLS SuperDraft history.
The selection marked a major milestone in his journey and highlighted how far he had come since his early days at Montverde.
Continuing the Professional Journey
Since entering the professional ranks, Diop's career has taken him across multiple leagues and countries. He spent time on loan with Serbian SuperLiga side FK Čukarički before returning to the United States.
Today, he continues his professional career with Rhode Island FC in the USL Championship, adding another chapter to a journey that began far from home.
Growing Faster
Looking back, Diop credits those early years at SIMA for helping him mature quickly and prepare for the challenges ahead.
The physical intensity, the independence of living away from family, and the daily demands of the program shaped not only the player he became — but the professional he continues to grow into today.
