The Montverde Academy girls volleyball team earned two victories in three matches during Friday's opening day of the Florida Gem High School Classic at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex in Wesley Chapel.

The Eagles defeated Berkeley Prep and Metairie Park Country Day before falling to Doral Academy Prep, moving their overall record to 7-3.

MVA opened the tournament with a hard-fought, three-set victory over Berkeley Prep. The Eagles captured the opening set 25-22 before Berkeley Prep responded with a 25-10 win in the second. MVA regrouped in the deciding set, prevailing 15-13 to secure the victory.

The Eagles followed that performance with a two-set sweep of Metairie Park Country Day. MVA survived a closely contested opening set 26-24 before completing the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the second.

MVA faced Doral Academy Prep in its final match of the day. After Doral won the opening set 25-15, the Eagles responded with a 25-19 victory to force a deciding third set. Doral secured the match by taking the final set 15-7.

The Eagles will return to the court Saturday for two more matches at the Florida Gem High School Classic, beginning with an 8 a.m. contest against First Baptist Prep.

The MVA junior varsity team also finished Friday with a 2-1 record. The Eagles defeated Poinciana Christian Prep 2-0 (25-16, 25-22), fell to True North Classical Academy 2-0 (20-25, 20-25) and closed the day with a three-set victory over Sunlake (18-25, 25-19, 15-9). The JV Eagles improved to 6-4 and will face East Ridge High School Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
