At the 2020 Virtual Varsity Sports Banquet, Montverde Academy Head Tennis Coach Jaime Oncins was awarded the Female Sport Coach of Year after a projected National Championship contention with the girls team.
"I feel very honored receiving this award and I want to share it with all the tennis coaches," said Oncins. "I am thankful for having such a great team of coaches, students and I am looking forward to the next season."
Before the COVID 19 preventative measures, the Lady Eagles were on pace to win the DecoTurf Tennis National Championship with Ole Miss commit Reka Zadori and Adelphi University commit Carolina Chaves leading the way. Zadori was given the MVP Award and Chaves was given the MVA Purple and Gold Award. This year, the national tournament was set to host 68 teams and would have featured 40 boys and 28 girls teams from 15 different states. In total, the tournament was set to host 26 defending team state champions and 14 defending state finalists.
Despite the unforeseen circumstances, Oncins continues to build his impressive resume after propelling the Lady Eagles to a runner up FHSAA State Championship finish in 2018 and a seventh-place finish at the DecoTurf National Tournament Championship last year. Oncins also led the Brazilian National Tennis team to their first win in the Americas Group 1 division over Barbados 3-1 securing their spot in the 2020 Davis Cup Rakuten Qualifiers, which was eventually postponed due to COVID 19.
Jaime Oncin's Legacy:
Winning at the highest level is a trait that Oncins has exemplified throughout his entire tennis career. In 1991, Oncins competed in the Davis Cup and participated in the tournament for a total of 11 years. To this day, Oncins is the only Brazilian athlete to reach the semifinal of the Davis Cup match twice since their debut in 1932. Oncins also competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games defeating Michael Chang who was ranked No.2 in the world at the time and also competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In those same years, Oncins reached the Davis Cup semifinals with one of the top ATP rankings in the world.
After an impeccable tennis career, Oncins was hired at Montverde Academy in 2015 as the Head Tennis coach for the high school tennis teams. Under his tenure, Oncins led the boys team to two consecutive undefeated seasons, three District Championships, two Regional Championships, and two State Championships. In 2018, Oncins transformed the high school tennis program into a tennis academy providing for domestic and international student-athletes. In their first year as a tennis academy, the boys team won their first National Championship Title at the 2019 National Championships at DecoTurf High School Tennis Team Championship. For the girls team, Oncins has propelled the Lady Eagles to a runner up FHSAA State Championship finish in 2018 and a seventh-place finish at the DecoTurf National Tournament Championship.
