The Montverde Academy girls' basketball team's defensive dominance propelled them to a 59-9 win over Deltona High School on Saturday in the Nest.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 18-0 lead thanks to multiple blocks and rebounds by Lety Vasconcelos.
Sahnya Jah was the leading scorer for the Montverde Academy girls' basketball team with 10 points. Lourdes Da Silva Costa joined in on the fun with nine points, and three rebounds. The team combined for 30 rebounds and 13 assists.
Although the girls started on an 18-0 scoring streak, head coach Special Jennings thought the team "started slow" and "played at the level of competition" she explained. Coach Jennings bounced back on a positive note when she remarked, "when we see the players who traditionally play more minutes celebrating the rest of their team, it's always a great time" referring to the extra minutes bench players got on the court today.
Montverde Academy girls' basketball team shot 47 percent from inside the three point line, while also shooting 47 percent from behind the arc.
Teamwork was a major goal for their game today. Chloe Sotell seemed to agree and said, "even though I didn't play my best individually, we have been focusing on 'we over me.' Tonight, especially, we tried to implement that to help us prepare for the tough games coming up next week," she explained.
Montverde Academy girls' basketball team will be back in action Monday when they take on Duncanville High School at the Inside Exposure Thanksgiving Classic in Jacksonville at 2:15 pm.
