Softball Splits a Pair of Home Games on Friday

JENNA MEDER MAKES SPECTACULAR DIVING CATCH IN GAME AGAINST LAKE HIGHLAND PREP

Montverde, Fla.— The Montverde Academy softball team extended its season opening winning streak to eight game, before losing its first game of the season later, as the Eagles defeated Lake Highland Prep 12-2, before falling to Berkeley Prep 5-2 on Friday evening.

MVA is now 8-1 overall, including 3-0 in Citrus League play.

In the win over Lake Highland Prep, the visiting Highlanders scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take the initial lead, before the Eagles countered with an onslaught of offense in the bottom of the first. MVA scored five runs in the bottom of the first and another two in the bottom of the second to lead 7-1. Then the Eagles got another five runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead by 10 en route to win.

Leila Susia was 3-for-3 in the opener with a double and a run batted in, while scoring three times. Nevaeh Williams was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Emerson Gunkel pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out four.

In the game against Berkeley Prep, the visiting Buccaneers scored a run in the top of the first, second and third to lead 3-0 early, and the visitors led from start to finish. The Eagles, runs came in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the sixth.

Leila Susaia went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while Makayla Navarro and Williams had two hits each.

Faith Fournier suffered her first loss of the season, pitching 3.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Williams pitched 4.0 innings in relief and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits.

MVA returns to action on Tuesday, March 22 for a game at Lyman High School at 6:00 pm.
