Panama City Beach, Fla.— The Montverde Academy softball team won both of its games on Friday, as the Eagles beat Escambia High School 13-1 before winning over Niceville High School 9-6 in day one of the Florida-US Softball Challenge.
The Eagles are now 4-0 this season.
In the win over Escambia, MVA scored six runs in the top of the first to take control and cruise to victory. Danika Spinogatti, Paris Ford and Miah Sostre had two hits each in the win. Sostre had a game-high three runs batted in, while Ford had a triple, a run batted in and scored twice. Spinogatti drove in two runs and scored once. Faith Fournier earned the win, going three innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit. Emerson Gunkel finished out the game, pitching the final two innings allowing no runs and no hits.
In the game against Niceville, the Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead, and MVA never trailed again. Spinogatti had another big game going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Leila Susaia went 2-for-4 against Niceville and scored three times. Ford hit another triple in the nightcap and drove in three runs. Fournier picked up the win in relief going three innings and allowing just one earned run (four total) while striking out two. Gunkel pitched the first four innings and allowed two (unearned) runs on two hits.
The Eagles will be back in action with two more games on Saturday. MVA will face Arnold High School at 11:00 am ET, before playing against Leon High School at 4:00 pm. ET.
