Montverde, Fla.— Post season awards seem to be coming for the Montverde Academy boys' basketball team at the speed of light! The latest coming via MaxPreps as Dariq Whitehead was named its National Player of the Year, while fellow teammate Dillon Mitchell was named a third team All-American and Malik Reneau was named an honorable mention for the 2021-22 boys' basketball season.
This is the second National Player of the Year Whitehead has received. The 6-6 guard also received the Naismith Trophy for most outstanding high school boys' basketball player last month. The Duke University committee averaged 17.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists this season to lead the Eagles to a 22-4 overall record this season and its second consecutive GEICO High School Nationals Championship. In the GEICO High School Nationals tournament he averaged 15.7 points and 5.7 assists in three games en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In addition to his two national Player of the Year honors, Whitehead was also named game MVP at the McDonalds All-American game on March 29 and was also selected to play at the Jordan Brand Classic Game in Chicago.
In his Montverde Academy career, Whitehead helped the Eagles to three GEICO High School Nationals championships and four overall national championships.
Mitchell, a 6-7 explosive small forward, averaged 11.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game this season. He was selected as a McDonalds All-American and was also selected to play in the Jordan Brand Classic. He was also named tournament MVP at the City of Palms Classic in December. He is committed to play college basketball at the University of Texas.
Reneau, a 6-8 forward, averaged 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds this past season, including 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds at the GEICO High School Nationals. He is still undecided and remains one of the top remaining unsigned seniors.
