The Montverde Academy boys' lacrosse team is just one win away from the state championship as the Eagles defeated Holy Trinity Episcopal 9-5 in the semifinal round of the 2022 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) regional championship on Wednesday evening.
The Eagles will now play at top seeded Benjamin High School in the regional championship on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
In Wednesday's win, the Eagles defense put the clamps on the host Tigers. MVA shutout Holy Trinity Episcopal in the first half, and led 3-0 after the first quarter and 4-0 at halftime. The Tigers got on the board in the third quarter with two goals, but the Eagles matched goals and still maintained a four goal lead, and MVA led 6-2 after three periods.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored the first two goals to edge closer and make the score 6-4 with 8:50 remaining. The two teams then traded goals and the score was 7-5 with 6:20 to play. But a pair of late insurance goals by Aaron Williams thrusted the Eagles back to a four goal lead, en route to the win.
Williams led the Eagles with three goals, while Spencer Odier and Jack Green netted two each. Coen Woodland and Seth Isenhour each had one goal each in the win. Troy Scott picked up eight groundballs, while JT Glass had five. Glass also earned 10 faceoff wins.
Eddie Roth made 13 saves for MVA.
