Boys’ and Girls’ Track & Field Teams Set for State Showdown

Montverde, Fla.— The Montverde Academy boys' and girls' track & field teams are set to take on the best the state of Florida has to offer as both teams are set to compete at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship in Gainesville on Thursday.

After both teams won the FHSAA District 7 championship on April 25, followed them both winning the FHSAA Region 2 championship on May 5, the Eagles are poised to capture the state crowns against all the FHSAA 2A schools can throw at them.

On the boys' side, the Eagles enter the championship meet having already won five individual meets this year. Not only did the Eagles win its district and regional meet, but MVA also won three other meets this season, including the Citrus League Championship on February 25, Mount Dora Christian Academy Invitational on March 29 and the IMG Academy Invitational on April 9. MVA also has a second place finish to their name this season when they finished second out of 40 schools at the Louie Bing Memorial Classic on February 18 and 19.

Individually, the Eagles have been led by the duo of Zyaire Nuriddin and Micah Larry. The two currently hold the top two fastest times in all of Florida high schools in the 100 meters. Nurridin ran the 100 meters in a time of 10.24 seconds when winning at the district championship meet, while Larry blazed the 100 meters in 10.27 when winning the regional championship meet. Additionally, Nuriddin has the fastest time this season in the 400 meters of 45.78 when winning at the Florida Relays on March 31. His winning time in that race was the fifth fastest time on record in Florida high school history and 25th fastest in United States high school history. Fellow teammate Alex Georgiev enters the meet with the second highest distance in the pole vault this season. He reached the mark of 4.84 meters (15'10.5") at the second Mount Dora Christian Invitational Meet on April 12.

On the girls' side, the Eagles not only swept their district and regional championships, but finished first of 47 schools at the Florida State Relays on March 25 and 26, while also claiming second place finishes at the Citrus League Championship on February 25, Bolles Bulldog Classic on March 4 and Mount Dora Christian Invitational on March 29.

Individually, the Eagles have been led by Micayah Holland who has won 15 events and finished second in two more. She has also run the fastest 100 meters of any girl in the state of Florida this year when she ran it in 11.31 seconds at the regional championship last week. Meanwhile Michelle Smith has done the fastest time in the state in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.86 when she won that event at the Louie Bing Memorial.

The state meet is slated for a 1:00 pm start and the events will be hosted by the University of Florida at Percy Beard Track on the UF campus.
