Montverde, Fla.— After having won seven national championships in the past 10 years, the Montverde Academy boys' basketball team is on a quest to win their eighth in 11 years in 2022-23. And the trajectory the Eagles will have to take is now official as Montverde Academy has announced the schedule for its defending GEICO High School Nationals boys' basketball team for the 2022-23 season.
Once again, the Eagles will play against a slate of highly talented teams from schools throughout the United States, which includes competitions in elite invitationals, National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) weekends and highly skilled teams around Central Florida.
The Eagles will play their usual rigorous schedule against the juggernauts from within the NIBC. The first NIBC game of the season will also be MVA's season opener against AZ-Compass (11/22) at the Hoopfest Invitational in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Other NIBC games include the Sunshine Classic at the Nest against IMG Academy (12/1), Long Island Lutheran (12/2) and Legacy Early College (12/3). The Eagles will square off against NIBC foes Bishop Walsh (12/8) and Oak Hill Academy (12/9) in Cumberland, Maryland. MVA will take on Sunrise Christian (1/5) and Wasatch Academy (1/6) to open 2023 before their final regular season NIBC games against La Lumiere (1/14) and Sunrise Christian (1/16).
MVA will also compete against formidable foes in Honolulu, Hawai'i in the Iolani Classic (12/17 – 12/21) and Union, New Jersey in the Metro Classic. The Eagles will also host their annual Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (MAIT) (1/26 – 1/28) in the Nest.
The Eagles will also enjoy time at the Nest with non-conference home games against Winter Haven High School (1/11), Central Pointe Christian Academy (1/21) and Calvary Christian (1/23). MVA closes out the regular season with a non -conference game at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
Three highly skilled returnees for the Eagles include Kwame Evans (No. 12 on the ESPN Senior 100), Dravyn Gibbs Lawhorn (No. 70 on the Senior Top 100) and Derik Queen (No. 12 on the ESPN Junior 60).
MVA roster will also include several key transfers, including Sean Stewart (No. 7 on the ESPN Senior 100), Christopher Johnson (No. 33 on the ESPN Senior 100), Marvel Allen (No. 52 on the ESPN Senior 100), Liam McNeeley (No. 15 on the ESPN Junior 60), Asa Newell (No. 23 on the ESPN Junior 60), Curtis Givens (No. 56 on the ESPN Junior 60) and Cooper Flagg (No. 2 on the ESPN Sophomore 25).
