The Montverde Academy boys' basketball team defeated IMG Academy 86-69 in day of the 2023 Nike EYBL Scholastic Sunshine Classic at the Nest on Thursday evening.

Playing in front of a standing room only crowd, the Eagles broke open a tight first quarter and outscored the opponent 26-14 to take a 16-16 tie and turn it into a 42-32 lead by halftime. MVA then dominated the third quarter 21-8 to put the game out of reach entering the fourth quarter.

Derik Queen led the Eagles with a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Asa Newell had 18 points. Cooper Flagg had 13 points, followed by Liam McNeeley with 12 points and Robert Wright with 11.

MVA outscored IMG 60-36 on points in the paint and held a 36-27 advantage on rebounds.

The Eagles remain undefeated this season at 5-0 overall and are back in action on Friday for day two against Christopher Columbus High School at 5:30 pm.
