Five players scored in double figures as the Montverde Academy boys' basketball team improved to 11-0 overall this season after the Eagles defeated Archbishop Stepinac 95-55 in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday evening.
Asa Newell recorded a double-double in the win with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Cooper Flagg and Derik Queen had a team co-high of 20 points each. Liam McNeeley knocked in 16 points and Robert Wright had 12 points and a game-high five assists.
The Eagles led from the opening minute and never trailed in the contest. MVA raced out to a 26-13 lead by the end of the first quarter, and the Eagles led 48-26 at halftime.
After holding a 41-11 rebounding advantage against the Cannon School on Monday, MVA had a similar advantage in this game, holding a 41-17 advantage off the glass.
The Eagles shot 63.8 percent (37-for-58) from the floor, and held a 38-20 advantage on points in the paint.
MVA will now play in the semifinal round on Friday at 7:00 pm against the winner of a game being played later on Thursday evening between IMG Academy and Paul VI. Check back here for schedule update.
