The Montverde Academy sofbtall team used a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a dramatic win on Thursday as the Eagles defeated South Lake High School 6-5 in the opening night of the Montverde Academy Invitational Softball Tournament (MAIST).
Luna Taboas delivered the game-winning double into the left-centerfield gap to score Nevaeh Williams from second to give the Eagles their first win of the season.
The hit by Taboas was her third of the game as she went 3-for-5 with a double and a run batted in. Fellow teammate Lexi Perez also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
The Eagles fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, before chipping away throughout the game. MVA got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on a single by Perez to score Taboas.Â
In the fifth inning, MVA tacked on three more runs to tie the game. Then the Eagles took the lead with another run in the bottom of the sixth. But South Lake responded with a run in the top of the seventh to set the stage for the dramatic ending.
As a result of the win, MVA advances into the winner's bracket and will play on Friday at 7:30 pm against the winner between the first game on Friday morning between Fort Myers High School and Oakleaf High School.
