Montverde, Fla. (July 14, 2023)—Montverde Academy Department of Athletics is excited to announce that three of its girls' soccer alumni will be competing on the world stage later this summer as they will be representing their native countries at the FIFA Women's Soccer World Cup taking place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
Former Montverde Academy girls' soccer team members Genesis Perez, Jody Brown and Isabella Flanigan will each be on the roster for their respective nation with Perez competing for Team Costa Rica, Brown on Team Jamaica and Flanigan playing with the Philippines.
All three former Montverde Academy student-athletes excelled on the pitch while with the Eagles during their high school years, which included having won Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championships during their time as student-athletes at MVA.
Perez, who was a part of the team last season that won the state championship, started in goal for the Eagles last season and logged over 1300 minutes. She made 47 saves, had a 0.582 goals allowed average and earned 10 shutouts while going 13-2-2 overall on the season.
Brown and Flanigan were teammates during the 2019 season when the Eagles won their second consecutive state championship. In that game the Eagles won 1-0, and the lone goal in the game was scored by Brown off an assist by Flanigan.
Since graduating from Montverde Academy, all have gone on to major Universities at the NCAA Division I level.
Perez will enter her freshman year at the University of Central Florida, who is now competing out of the Big 12 Conference, this fall.
Brown has had an award-winning career at ACC powerhouse Florida State University, where she has was named an All-ACC first team member and United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region first team honors last season.
Flanigan is now attending the University of West Virginia out of the Big 12 conference.
"I think having three players attend women's World Cup is nothing short of spectacular," head girls' soccer coach Robbie Aristodemo said. "I am super proud of all the girls that spent time here. It's great for our program to have players that are continuously playing at the next level and gives our younger players something to aspire to."
