Montverde Academy boys' basketball improved to 23-0 on the season after defeating Nike EYBL Scholastic foe La Lumiere 75-54 in day one of the Metro Classic in Franklin Township, New Jersey on Thursday evening.
The Eagles were led by Derik Queen with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Cooper Flagg added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Robert Wright scored 14 points and a game-high eight assists, and Curtis Givens added 10 points in the win.
MVA led from start to finish. The Eagles doubled the Lakers points in the first quarter, leading 16-8 after one period. MVA extended the lead to double digits through the second quarter to and was up 30-19 by halftime.
MVA outscored La Lumiere by 10 points in the decisive third quarter to lead by 21 entering the fourth quarter, gaining a comfortable lead en route to victory.
MVA dominated inside, holding a 54-10 advantage on points in the paint. The Eagles also held a 16-0 advantage on fastbreak points, and a 20-3 advantage on points off turnovers.
The win also improved MVA's Nike EYBL Scholastic record to 8-0 on the season.
The Eagles are off on Friday but will be back in action on Saturday for a game against St. Rose in day three of the Metro Classic at 9:00 pm.
