Montverde, Fla. (March 14, 2024)— On Wednesday afternoon, the brackets were released for the boys' and girls' basketball tournaments for the Chipotle High School Nationals in Brownsburg, Indiana April 4 - 6, and for the third year in a row, Montverde Academy will have both of its teams represented at the year-end battle. The boys earned the top seed for the eight team tournament, while the girls earned the No. 4 seed in the six team field.
On the boys' side, the Eagles, as expected, earned the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with a perfect 30-0 record, and will play AZ-Compass (AZ) in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, April 4 at 8:00 pm. Should MVA win that game, it will play the semifinals against the winner between No. 4 seed Long Island Lutheran (NY) and No. 5 seed Columbus High School (FL) on Friday, April 5 at 4:30 pm. If MVA wins in the semifinals, it plays for the championship game on Saturday, April 6 at 12:00 pm against either No. 2 seed Paul VI (VA), No. 3 seed Prolific Prep (CA), No. 6 seed Link Academy (MO) and No. 7 seed IMG Academy (FL).
MVA is looking for its growing record seventh high school national championship. The Eagles won this tournament in 2013, 14, 15, 18, 21 and 22. MVA has dominated the entire season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Not only are the Eagles undefeated this season, but 27 of their 30 wins have been by double digit margins. Overall, the Eagles have outscored its opponents by an average score of 86.0 – 54.7. They have been led in scoring by Derik Queen at 16.4 points per game, followed by Cooper Flagg at 16.1 and Liam McNeeley at 12.7.
On the girls' side, two-time defending champion MVA earned the No. 4 seed after finishing the 2023-24 regular season with a 21-4 overall record, and the Eagles will play No. 5 seed Sidwell Friends (DC) in the opening round on Thursday, April 4 at 12:00 pm. With a win there, MVA will play on Friday, April 5 at 12:30 pm against No. 1 seed Long Island Lutheran (NY) who has a first round bye. Should the Eagles advance after that, they will play for their third consecutive championship on Saturday, April 6 at 10:00 am against either No. 2 seed Grayson (GA), No. 3 seed IMG Academy (FL) or No. 6 seed Grace Christian (NC).
MVA, the only girls' basketball team to win this tournament in consecutive years will look to become just the first girls' basketball program to win the tournament three times overall. This season, the Eagles have outscored opponents by an average margin of 64.4 – 51.0, and MVA has been led in scoring by Jaloni Cambridge at 20. 4 per game, followed by Vivian Iwuchukwu at 11.0 and Eris Lester at 7.2.
All tournament games will be televised live on the ESPN family of networks, and all games can be streamed on the Watch ESPN app.
