The Montverde Academy softball team played against arguably its toughest opponent it will see all year, and lost the only game it may lose this year.
The Eagles were defeated at home 10-0 to fellow state and nationally ranked Doral Academy on Saturday evening.
The loss was the first of the season for MVA who is now 9-1 overall.
In a game that was scoreless into the fifth inning, the visiting Firebirds broke through in a massive way. Doral Academy scored six runs in the top of the fifth, before scoring another four runs in the top of the seventh to put the game well out of reach.
Despite the one sided affair, the Eagles got a well played game by junior shortstop Luna Taboas who was 3-for-4, while teammates Danika Spinogatti and Addie Poe had one hit each.
Spinogatti also drew a walk in the bottom of the first, the 71st of her career at Montverde Academy, to set a new record for most walks in a career at Montverde Academy.
Pitcher Nevaeh Williams suffered her first loss of the season. She pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, while striking out four. MVA used four pitchers in the game. In addition to Williams, La'Breah Sands, Missy Odom and Emerson Gunkel also saw action.
The loss by Montverde Academy is not only the first loss of the season for the team, but the first loss at home since a 7-1 defeat to Windermere High School on March 28, 2023. The loss snaps a 32 game home winning streak.
The Eagles will look to get back on track on Monday with a home game against Trinity Prep at 6:00 pm.
