The Montverde Academy girls soccer team returned to action in dominant fashion, earning an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Sickles High School on Monday afternoon at Dan Newlin Injury Attorney Stadium on the campus of Montverde Academy. The match was called after 67 minutes of play.
Seven different players found the back of the net for the Eagles, led by a two-goal performance from Alessandra Jimenez. Montverde Academy controlled the match from the opening whistle, applying consistent pressure and capitalizing on scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
Jimenez opened the scoring in the 12th minute off an assist from Caroline Ritchey. Ritchey followed with a goal of her own just over four minutes later, finishing a setup from Lola Rey. Brianna Burkhalter made it 3-0 midway through the first half with an assist from Kendall Seays, before Rey scored on a corner kick late in the half, assisted by Seays. Fiona Valtonen added to the advantage late in the opening half, scoring in the 39th minute off a pass from Taylor Heaton, as the Eagles took a commanding 5-0 lead into halftime.
The Eagles continued its strong play in the second half. Jimenez added her second goal of the afternoon in the 51st minute, with Burkhalter providing the assist. Burkhalter then assisted again on Isadora Santiago's goal just over four minutes later. Heaton capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute to end the match under the mercy rule.
With the win, Montverde Academy improves to 12-1-1 on the season. The Eagles return to action on Friday, January 9, with a road match at XL Soccer Academy scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
