The Montverde Academy girls soccer team continued its dominant postseason run on Monday evening, defeating Calvary Christian 2-0 in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) regional semifinal at Dan Newlin Injury Attorney Stadium.
With the victory, Montverde Academy improved to 18-1-1 on the season and advances to the regional championship game for the fourth consecutive year.
After a scoreless first half, Lola Rey provided the breakthrough just over two minutes into the second half, finishing the opening goal to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Rey struck again in the 72nd minute, sealing the win with her second goal of the night and giving Montverde Academy a two-goal cushion.
While the final score remained close, Montverde Academy controlled the match from start to finish. The Eagles dominated possession and spent the majority of the contest in the offensive third, outshooting Calvary Christian 27-1 overall and holding a commanding 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Montverde Academy also earned 15 corner kicks, while allowing none to Calvary Christian.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Strausbaugh was largely untested, needing to make just one save to preserve the clean sheet.
Montverde Academy will now turn its attention to the regional championship game on Friday, February 13, when the Eagles host Lake Highland Prep in a highly anticipated rematch of last season's regional final. Lake Highland Prep defeated Montverde Academy 2-1 in that match, ending the Eagles' season and their bid for a third consecutive state championship.
