Buzzer Beating Dunk Lifts Boys Basketball to National Quarterfinal Round Win

In a moment that will be remembered on the national stage, Derek Daniels threw down a buzzer-beating dunk to lift Montverde Academy to a thrilling 57-55 win over Prolific Prep in the quarterfinal round of the 2026 Chipotle High School National Championship on Thursday afternoon in Fishers, Indiana.

With the score tied at 55-55 in the closing seconds, Prolific Prep had possession and appeared poised for the final shot. A miss with just under six seconds remaining led to a scramble for the rebound, where Dhani Miller made the play of the game on the defensive end, knocking the ball loose with approximately four seconds to go.

Miller quickly secured the ball and, without hesitation, delivered a perfectly placed long bounce pass ahead to Daniels, who sprinted down the floor and finished with a dunk as time expired, sealing the dramatic victory and sending the Eagles into the semifinal round.

With the win, Montverde Academy moves one step closer to an unprecedented ninth national championship.

While the final seconds were exciting, the first thirty-one plus minutes were just as intense. The he game itself was tightly contested from start to finish. Montverde Academy controlled much of the early action, building a lead of as many as 12 points in the first half. The Eagles held a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter and led 35-30 at halftime.

Prolific Prep responded in the second half, and the intensity only grew. By the end of the third quarter, the score was tied at 46-46. The fourth quarter featured constant momentum swings, with nine lead changes and eight ties before Daniels' final slam provided the difference.

Miller led the way for MVA with an outstanding performance, finishing with 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting while adding six rebounds. Daniels recorded nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds, punctuated by the game-winning dunk. Javion Tyndale facilitated the offense with a team-high six assists.

The teams were evenly matched statistically, each scoring 26 points in the paint. Prolific Prep held a slight 29-27 edge in rebounding, including a 9-7 advantage on the offensive glass. However, Montverde Academy made its opportunities count, holding a decisive 7-0 edge in second-chance points.

Montverde Academy will now face the winner of the semifinal matchup between AZ Compass and Spire Academy on Friday at 2:00 p.m., with a spot in Saturday's championship game on the line as the Eagles continue their pursuit of history.
