Montverde Academy Alumnus and Georgia Tech basketball standout Michael Devoe '18 is becoming an elite guard in the ACC and has led the Yellow Jackets to a 10-6 overall winning record.
According to the Daily Orange, Devoe has become a key athlete for the Yellow Jackets. Devoe is averaging 9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. As a freshman, Devoe has been improving in every college game and averaging the most minutes played on the court. He also has scored in double digits four of the last five games against top ACC teams.
"He's gone from playing cool to not playing cool," said Head Coach of Georgia Tech, Josh Pastner. "He's grimy, he's got a toughness about him, and it might not look really cool but it makes him that much more of a better player."
Devoe's high school career started at Oak Ridge where he averaged over 25 points per game. For his senior year, he transferred to Montverde Academy to compete against the top teams in the nation. As ESPN's No. 45 recruit in the 2018 class, Devoe wanted to play on the Montverde Academy team to help him prepare to compete against collegiate superstars. Since the MVA basketball program aims to create an easy transition for student-athletes, from high school to college hoops, with practice routines complete with three sessions a day including lifting, Devoe knew that it was the right decision to move to Montverde. Under Head Coach Kevin Boyle, the MVA basketball program has coached NBA players including Ben Simmons '15, Joel Embiid and D'Angelo Russell '14 which ultimately provided them interest from the top coaches in the NCAA.
"(Boyle) prepares guys not only for the ACC but all higher levels of basketball," said Duke's head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I'm a big Kevin Boyle fan."
With only 15 games under his belt at Georgia Tech, Devoe still has a chance to improve in his game and make a push for the big NCAA tournament in March.
