Since its inception, Montverde Academy has been developing athletes to compete at the collegiate and professional level. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has benefited greatly in the past few years from recruiting student-athletes that competed on the MVA basketball team.  

Recently, the recruitment of former Eagle and Duke Blue Devil freshman R.J. Barrett '18 has increased Duke's chances of contending for a National Title and helped place them as the No.1 team in the nation.

"He [R.J. Barrett] is a very, very mature basketball player," said Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski in an ESPN interview. "Before coming to Duke he was a Canadian World Champion and has always played against the highest competition."

Some of the former MVA Alumni that were ACC standouts include Florida State's Solomon Alabi and Wake Forests's Doral Moore who also went to play on professional teams. Alabi competed on several NBA teams including the Toronto Raptors and the New Orleans Hornets while Moore competed on the Memphis Grizzlies Summer Camp Team and currently plays for their D-League team.

"Playing at Montverde was really important," Krzyzewski said of Barrett. "Playing for Kevin Boyle was fantastic."

There have been six NBA Draft picks from Montverde Academy since 2005 which includes Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), D'Angelo Russell (Brooklyn Nets), Luc Mbah a Moute (Los Angeles Clippers), Dakari Johnson, and Solomon Alabi. According to Duke, MVA is unquestionably one of the top basketball programs for boys basketball.
