MVA Boys Varsity Basketball Team Make Academic History

The Montverde Academy basketball team is currently ranked No.1 in the United States with five ESPN Top 100 players that are currently committed to prestigious Division I colleges. They are undefeated with a record of 5-0 outcompeting their competition by an average score of 30 plus points per game. It's no question the Eagles are dominant on the court but they also are having the best academic year as a team since two-time Naismith High School Coach of the Year Kevin Boyle took over the program in 2011.

Below is the list of current varsity athletes that have earned Honor Roll status:

"Since I've been here, this has been the highest GPA average in the history of the program," said Head Coach Kevin Boyle. "I am proud of our athletes in that they don't just value being a good basketball player, but they also value being a good person off the court and take full advantage of the education provided here [Montverde Academy]."

The MVA basketball team is currently undefeated with a record of 5-0 and are coming off a big win over No. 6 nationally ranked DeMatha High School 76-56. Headlined by the No.1 player in the nation, Cade Cunningham, No.11 Scott Barnes, No. 20 Day'Ron Sharpe, and No. 30 Moses Moody in the senior class of 2020, the game was also televised on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN mobile app.

Leading the Eagles in scoring, Scottie Barnes and Dariq Whitehead had 14 points each for the night and Cade Cunnigham also added 13 of his own.

The Eagles started out the game with high intensity both on offense and defense. Barnes set the tone on the defensive end with multiple blocks, several offensive rebounds, and deflections. The Eagles took a 39-21 lead into halftime and came out in the third quarter on a 13-0 run to put the game away as the lead expanded 66-35 after the quarter.
DeMatha (5-2) was led by Earl Timberlake, a University of Miami commit, who had 15 points.

MVA now goes to Fort Myers to play in the City of Palms Classic next week December 19-23. Their opening game is against Delaware's preseason No. 1 ranked team, The Sanford School.
