The Montverde Academy cross country is preparing for the 2019-2020 academic school year by training at the Brevard Distance Runners Camp in North Carolina from July 7 - July 27.
Sponsored by Adidas, the camp is located in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains which is bordered by 450,000-acres of the Pisgah National Forest. Additionally, Dupont State Recreational Forest boasts more than 10,000 acres of forest, trails, and waterfalls between Hendersonville and Brevard, North Carolina.
The MVA athletes will have an opportunity to learn from and run with professional coaches and the top college athletes from around the country. The camp promotes team building through various activities (structured and unstructured) and opportunities to meet and experience other team cultures.
"We enjoy this camp because it allows us the opportunity to train with experienced coaches and athletes and gives us the opportunity to learn skills outside of running that may still be helpful," said Lori Treweek. "We also like the flexibility of the camp. For example, we consistently work on form drills throughout our training, so we may choose a yoga class or a hike in the mountains as opposed to attending that particular session. We also enjoy a different climate and perfect scenery. The kids run extremely challenging trails, along rivers and waterfalls, climbing significant inclines, eventually reaching the summit for a beautiful view."
Last year, the cross country team participated in the camp and enjoyed not only the training sessions but also the mountain sceneries after a challenging run. In the past season, the girls cross country team earned their third consecutive Regional Championship title and second consecutive District Championship. Every athlete on the boys team was able to earn personal records and top finishes at several cross country races. With another productive offseason, the team looks to build on their past accomplishments.
