Montverde Academy Head basketball coach Kevin Boyle has coached many talented guards in the past years including Kyrie Irving (Boston Celtics), D'Angelo Russell '14 (Brooklyn Nets), Ben Simmons '15 (Philadelphia 76ers) and the No.3 projected pick in the 2019 NBA Draft R.J. Barrett '18. Now the torch has been passed onto returning senior Cade Cunningham who is currently ranked as the No.8 high school player in the nation by ESPN.
According to New York recruiting expert, Tom Konchalski, Cunningham has the right size, agility, and basketball IQ to play the game at the highest level.
"He [Cade Cunningham] is an NBA guard," said Konchalski in an interview after Cunningham earned nine points, six assists and three rebounds in an 89-51 win over Ranney (N.J.) at the 2019 Metro Classic.
Recently, Cunningham announced his top 10 list of colleges he would consider attending after graduating from MVA in May 2020. The following list can be seen below:
Texas
Duke
North Carolina
Kentucky
Kansas
Washington
Memphis
Oklahoma State
Florida
Virginia
"This whole process has been a great experience for me," said Cunningham. "I have spoken with great coaches such as Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams and our conversations meant a lot to me because these are coaches I have admired since I started watching college basketball. I've never been the type of guy to be starstruck, but it's still surreal. It's a blessing."
Cunningham had a standout junior season with the Eagles as he averaged over 15 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game. One of his most prolific games was against Oak Hill where he scored 25 points, dished out 8 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds.
Cunningham is currently practicing with the U19 USA team at training camp in hopes to make the roster to compete in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Greece. Training camp will be used to determine the official, 12-member roster for the 2019 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Cup Team, which will be selected by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee.
Finalists for the team are expected to be announced on the morning of June 18, 2019.
Montverde Academy wishes the best of luck to Cunningham and his future endeavors.
