Mjracle Sheppard, Vivian Iwuchukwu and Sahnya Jah had 13 points each to lead the Montverde Academy girls' basketball team to a 72-43 win over Mainland High School in the Nest on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles took the lead in the first quarter of the game and after a 4-0 MVA lead, Mainland requested a timeout. Then Iwuchukwu had a continuation three. Then Costa made a layup and Sheppard made another layup. Mainland requested another timeout, and the score was 11-0.
"I feel great about the win, it was definitely team effort, everybody plays their parts," Sheppard said.
In the second quarter of the game, Lety Vasconcelos took the lead in scoring two points then Cori Allen made a jump shot before Rusne Augustinaite made a three-point shot, Mainland again requested a third timeout with the score 20-5.
MVA led 31-15 at halftime. Then in the beginning of the third quarter, Sheppard had one of her game-high seven steals and passed the ball to Jah for a fastbreak layup. By the end of the third quarter, MVA led 46-25.
"Mainland is a great team, they were very aggressive very scrappy," MVA head coach Special Jennings said. "We had to get accustom to their physicality and just adjust, but all and all I think that we came out and did a great job."
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles continued to expand the lead. Two seconds after Jah made a three-pointer, Sheppard had another steal and assisted Augustinaite who made a three-pointer. In the last minute of the game, Chloe Sotell made a corner three-pointer and Costa also connected on a three-pointer before the game ended.
