The Montverde Academy boys' basketball team had their eight-game win streak snapped on Tuesday evening as the Eagles were defeated by Mount Saint Joseph 56-55 in the semifinal round of the 2022 'Iolani Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The loss drops the Eagles to 8-2 on the season and marks the first loss for the Eagles since their season opener on November 22.
MVA was led by Kwame Evans with 12 points, while Cooper Flagg scored 11 and had a team-high eight rebounds. Christopher Johnson had a team-high eight assists in the contest.
The Eagles opened the game connecting on their first seven shots of the game and led 23-12 by the end of the first quester. But MVA was limited to just four second quarter points and went nearly seven minutes without scoring. By halftime, the Eagles lost the lead and were down 28-27 at the break.
The Eagles led by as much as five in the third quarter and were up 39-34 midway through.
MVA was down 54-52 before a lay-up by Flagg made the score 54-54 with 2:14 to go. The Gaels connected on the ensuing possession and took a 56-54 lead with 1:44 to go and held on for the win.
The Eagles will now face Milton High School in the consolation game on Wednesday evening at 11:30 pm (6:30 pm in Honolulu). The game will be streamed live on YouTube free of charge.
