The Montverde Academy softball team earned their fourth walk-off win of the season and second in as many games as the Eagles defeated Windermere Prep 2-1 in 13 innings in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) district championship game at the MVA softball complex on Thursday.
Danika Spinogatti, who had three hits total on the night, and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, delivered a walk-off triple with two outs in the bottom of the thirteenth inning to score Jenna Meder, who hit a two-out single to start the rally.
The game was otherwise a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring an earned run for the first 12 innings. Windermere Prep took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh when Nevaeh Williams reached on an error to score Spinogatti, who doubled earlier in the inning.
Meanwhile Williams pitched brilliantly all evening for the Eagles. She pitched all 13 innings and allowed one (unearned) run on six hits, while striking out 20.
The Eagles will now head into the regional tournament which starts with the quarterfinal round games on Wednesday, May 11. The Eagles will find out who they play and where in the coming days.
