Luna Taboas and Aracelis Jimenez went a combined 5-for-8 and accounted for all four Eagle runs as the Montverde Academy softball team defeated the Episcopal School 4-1 in the championship game of the 2023 Montverde Academy Invitational Softball Tournament (MAIST) on Saturday evening.

Serving as the visiting team in the game, MVA scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the top of the seventh inning in the win. Both innings saw the Eagles score in similar fashion.

Down 1-0 with two outs in the top of the fifth and with an 0-2 count, Taboas ripped a double to center field to keep the inning alive. The next batter, Jimenez, also facing an 0-2 count, lined a shot into the leftfield corner and motored home for an inside the park homerun to give MVA a 2-1.

Then in the top of the seventh, again with two outs and the bases empty, Taboas kept the inning alive by legging out a bunt single. Then Jimenez ripped a single to left field that got past the Episcopal left fielder, rolling all the way to the fence, allowing both runners to score.

Individually, Taboas was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Jimenez went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs.

Starting pitcher Nevaeh Williams was brilliant in the circle, pitching the entire game, and allowing one (unearned) run on two hits, while striking out nine.

The Eagles are now 3-3 on the season, and will be back in action on Thursday, March 9 for a home game against Osceola High School at 6:00 pm.
