The homecoming of Montverde Academy boys' basketball stars Cooper Flagg and Ace Flagg was a success!
Playing in front of a capacity crowd of 6,700 at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine, the Pine Tree State basketball folk heroes did not disappoint. Cooper Flagg, behind team-highs of 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots led the Eagles to their 14th straight win as MVA defeated Gonzaga College High School 93-51 in day one of the Maine Event.
Meanwhile, twin Ace Flagg, added six points and five rebounds in the win.
As a unit, the Eagles dominated from the opening tip to the final buzzer. After winning the opening tip, Flagg scored the first field goal of the game, two seconds into the contest to put the Eagles up, 2-0… and the Eagles' lead continued to swell of the final 31 plus minutes.
MVA scampered out on a 12-0 run to open, before Gonzaga College High School got on the board. And by the end of the first quarter, the Eagles were up 24-4.
MVA also dominated in other facets of the game. They held a 60-22 advantage on points in the paint, 21-5 on second chance points and 29-7 in points off the bench.
Four other Eagles scored in double-figures in the win. Robert Wright netted 15 points and had a team-high nine assists. Asa Newell came off the bench and scored 11 points and had nine rebounds. Derik Queen and Liam McNeeley chipped in with 10 points each.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for day two of the Maine Event against CATS Academy at 6:00 pm at the Portland Expo Center.
