The Montverde Academy girls' basketball team won a thriller at the Nest on Thursday defeating Palm Bay High School 56-55 for its twentieth win of the season.
The visiting Pirates were up 55-53 with the ball with less than a minute to play. The possession resulted in a missed shot with just over thirty seconds left.
Jaloni Cambridge raced down the floor and drew a foul with 25.2 seconds remaining. She made 1-of-2 from the line as MVA edged closer, down 55-54.
The shot clock was now off, and after a time out, Eris Lester stole the inbound pass, giving the Eagles the ball.
MVA called another time out with 18.6 seconds to go. After the time out, Cambridge got the ball, went around a pick and connected on a pull up jumper from the wing with 5.8 seconds left to give the Eagles the lead.
Palm Bay failed to take a shot during its last possession. And after a non-shooting foul by MVA with 1.0 seconds left, Plam Bay committed its own foul while trying to inbound the ball, giving it back to the Eagles. MVA then inbounded the ball and ran out the final second of play.
Cambridge scored a team-high 15 points, while Lester added 14. Vivian Iwuchukwu scored 12 for the Eagles.
The Eagles are now 20-1 overall this season, and MVA returns to action on Friday, February 9 for a game at the Nest against IMG Academy at 6:00 pm.
