Senior starting pitcher Christian Borbely struck out the first nine batters he faced and pitched a no-hitter in the process as the Montverde Academy baseball team defeated Cary Academy 5-0 in the 2024 season opener at Lindor Field on Wednesday evening.
Borbely faced the minimum, walked none and struck out 16 of the 21 batters he faced.
The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the first, two in the second and one each in the third and fourth to provide Borbely more than enough run support for the season opening win.
At the plate, Anthony Picciano went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in, while Arnoldo Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Joevansky Velez went 2-for-3 in the win, while 74Michael Alicea hit a double and scored twice.
The Eagles are now 1-0 on the season and return to action on Friday for a game at Lake Highland Prep at 6:00 pm.
