The Montverde Academy girls' soccer team has reached the summit!
The Eagles, for the second year in a row, have won the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 3A state championship as MVA defeated Edgewood High School 1-0 in the championship game on Saturday morning at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
Estefania Gonzalez netted the games' lone goal, in the sixty-second minute to break a scoreless tie.
Teammate Lola Ressler sent the ball across the crease. But Edgewood starting goalkeeper got a hand on the pass but failed to control it, leaving it loose in front of her. Gonzalez was in the right place and knocked the ball into the net for the goal.
It was an otherwise back and forth game with neither team dominating possession. Edgewood held a 6-4 advantage in shots, while MVA held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks attempted.
MVA finished 18-4-1 overall. The goal by Gonzalez added to her team lead of 28 goals on the season, while also leading the team with 12 assists.
"I think it was great, winning back to back. Everybody did a great job. We did really well," said Gonzalez.
