The Montverde Academy girls' soccer team earned a pulsating win in dramatic fashion on Friday night at a rocking Dan Newlin Injury Attorney Stadium.
Lola Ressler netted a goal in overtime during the ninety-sixth minute to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Eagles to a 4-3 win in the semifinal round of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 3A Region 3 championship.
The win came after the Eagles lost a two goal lead in the final ten minutes of regulation.
Prior to that, the Eagles were in control of the contest from the early stages of the match.
MVA took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play on a goal by Estefania Gonzalez. Then moments later, Ressler scored her first of two goals in the tenth minute of play to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
Midway through the first half, Lake Highland Prep scored its first goal of the game to cut the lead in half.
With the 2-1 score intact, the Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the sixty-second minute on another goal by Gonzalez.
Then the Highlanders scored two goals in just over a four minute span to tie the game. The latter goal came on a penalty kick in the seventy-fourth minute, and suddenly the score was 3-3.
The win was the fifteenth of the season for MVA, who now will host the regional championship on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 pm against Berkeley Prep, who won their semifinal round match 5-1 against Bishop Verot.
