After a scoreless seven innings, the Montverde Academy softball team scored the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Horizon High School 1-0 in eight innings in a well played game at the Montverde Academy Softball Complex on Wednesday evening.
The win was the 20th of the season for MVA who is now 20-4 overall on the year.
Starting pitcher Nevaeh Williams earned the win in the circle after pitching eight solid innings, allowing no runs on four hits, while striking out eight to hold down the fort until the Eagles got on the board in the walk-off win.
MVA scored the game's lone run by taking advantage of a Horizon miscue. La'Breah Sands was placed at second base to start the inning (via international tiebreaker rule), and with one out, Colby Reish put down a well placed sacrifice bunt. But the throw to first base was thrown over the Horizon first baseman's head, allowing Sands to score on the play to give the Eagles the win.
The win was the 13th in the last 14 games for MVA.
The Eagles had two hits in the contest, including an infield single by Luna Taboas and a liner to left centerfield by Lexi Perez.
The win by Williams was the eleventh of the season as she improved to 11-4 overall. It was also the tenth shutout of the season for the Eagles whose team ERA dropped to 0.71 for the season.
MVA is back in action for the final game of the 2024 regular season at home against Eustis High School at 6:00 pm.
