Senior ace pitcher Christian Borbely pitched a masterpiece on Tuesday, allowing no runs on one infield hit and struck out seven to help the Montverde Academy baseball team to the district championship as the Eagles beat Trinity Prep 8-0 in the semifinal round of the FHSAA Class 3A District 9 tournament.
Borbely's lone hit allowed was a ground ball deep in the hole at shortstop that the batter just beat out in the top of the sixth.
While Borbely dazzled, the Eagle bat offered more than enough offense.
MVA scored a run in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third to go ahead 2-0 after three innings. The Eagles tacked out another two in the fourth, and after a scoreless fifth, MVA added four in the bottom of the sixth to distance itself.Â
Seven players had at least one hit for the Eagles, including two by Donald Steward and Arnaldo Gonzalez who had two each and both drove in a run. Meanwhile Federic Irving was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Michael Alicea and Danati Frontudo were both 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in each.
As a result of the win, MVA improved to 14-8 overall on the season and play for the championship game this Thursday, May 2 at home against Umatilla High School at 6:00 pm.Â
