The Montverde Academy girls volleyball team was in a pickle! The Eagle were down 24-17 in the first set and seemed destined to have to play a minimum of four sets to win. But behind a ferocious, energetic Nest, packed with members of "The Flock," and dozens of members of the Montverde International Futbul Club (MIFC) cheering, the Eagles snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat.
After an unexpected 26-24 victory in the opening set, the Eagles proceeded to beat East Ridge 25-12 in the second set and 25-17 in the third to take the match and improve to 4-2 overall this season with its third consecutive win.
Natalia Baquerizo had a team-high 10 kills in the win with four blocks and a service ace. Meanwhile, Mirea Thederahn added seven kills, eight digs and four blocks. Evy DeClercq had four kills and eight blocks, while Amelie Jenkins added four kills, three blocks and two service aces.
Isabella Parra had a season-high 36 assists in the win, while teammates Vero Ruiz, Nybia Rivera-Alvarez and Sarai Vicente had double figures in digs. Ruiz had a team-high 16, while Rivera-Alvarez had 12 and Vicente had 10.
MVA is now 5-2 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, September 10 for a home match and Employee Appreciation Night against Windermere Prep at 6:00 pm (junior varsity game at 4:30 pm).
**Earlier in the evening, the junior varsity team remained undefeated on the season with a 2-0 (25-23, 26-24) win. The JV team is now 6-0 this season.
