The Montverde Academy girls volleyball team is set for a high-stakes rematch tonight, as the No. 2-seeded Eagles visit top-seeded Lake Highland Prep in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Regional Championship at 6:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the state semifinal round.
This matchup marks a rematch of last season's regional final, which Lake Highland Prep won en route to capturing the state title. Montverde Academy (19-5) earned its spot in tonight's championship after defeating No. 7 Keystone Heights in the quarterfinals and No. 3 McKeel Academy 3-1 in Saturday's semifinal. Lake Highland Prep (22-6) advanced with wins over No. 8 Taylor High and No. 5 The Villages Charter.
The two teams met earlier this season, with the Eagles sweeping the Highlanders 3-0 to snap an eight-match winless streak against them that dated back to 2018. Montverde Academy is led by Natalia Baquerizo, who has tallied 209 kills this season, and Nybia Rivera-Alvarez, who leads the team with 247 digs. For Lake Highland Prep, Isa Umpierre leads the attack with 271 kills, while Juli Rosario-Mendez anchors the defense with 324 digs.
The event will stream live on the NFHSÂ Network.
