Girls Soccer Loses Tough Game in Regional Championship

The Montverde Academy girls' soccer team's season came to an end on Wednesday after losing a very tight 2-1 decision against Lake Highland Prep in the championship round of the regional tournament on campus.

From kickoff, Lake Highland Prep started off strong with an intense high press, and were in full control of the midfield. The Highlanders kept the ball very well, connecting and finding good passes.

Lake Highland Prep also held the Eagles to zero shots in the first half, and the Highlanders broke the scoreless tie with 7:18 to go before halftime with a goal to jump ahead 1-0.

In what seemed to be a tale of two halves, the Eagles adjusted and dominated the majority of the second half. Lake Highland Prep was unable to maintain the high intensity they had shown in the first half, and the Eagles took control as  they have been accustomed to doing all season long.

The equalizer came through Lola Rey, just 1:37 into the second half, and was assisted by Vienna Morgan, after a wonderful individual 1v1 play against the Lake Highland full back.

But in the sixty first minute a foul by the Eagles in the box awarded a penalty kick to the Highlanders. The kick was executed low 90 just inside of the left goalpost.

"Eight out of the eleven starters are underclassmen, so we are pretty proud of the group. I thought we were the better team on the night," head coach Robbie Aristodemo said.

Despite the loss, the Eagles enjoyed an incredible season of success. They went 19-2-0 and won the district championship. The Eagles scored 80 goals on the season, while 13 of their 19 wins were clean sheets. Luisa Tannus led the team with 18 goals and 38 points, while Lola Rey netted 11 goals and had 24 points. Vienna Morgan had a team-high eight assists on the season, while goalkeeper Alyssa Strausbaugh made 54 saves, had a .657 saves percentage and earned 13 shutouts.
