In Montverde Academy boys lacrosse's first game of the district tournament, the Eagles got a dominant 13-6 win over Trinity Prep at home on Thursday evening.
The Eagles started off dominating with five shots in the first five mins with three on goal. A goal from Evan Flanagan and an assist from Nate Kuhn got the Eagles on the board with just over two minutes gone by. MVA then scored three more times during the first quarter with Gavin Ionelli scoring all of them with assists by Blake Kuhn and brother Nate Kuhn.
Entering the second quarter with a 4-1 lead, the Eagles continued their offensive trend. MVA took numerous shots, keeping the Saints on their heels. Tanner Moore, with a brave solo charge, put the next MVA goal to put the Eagles up 5-1. MVA increased its lead through the second quarter, capped by a goal by Jelly Lopez with 11 seconds remaining. He slipped past the Trinity Prep defense, leaving him one-on-one with the Saints goalie in front of the net give MVA an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The Eagles had a comfortable second half with Blake Kuhn sealing the deal scoring with six seconds left and getting his 50th point of the season.
"We had better command of the offense," said head boys lacrosse coach, Chris Spaulding. "(We) shot the ball pretty well, got a lot of shots on goal, gotta clean some of that up for sure to do better against (semifinal round opponent) Bishop Moore."
The top goal scorer for the Eagles was Gavin Ionelli with four first quarter goals. Camden Fischer, Flanagan, and Moore were also goal contributors with two goals each in the victory.
The Kuhn brothers had the most assists in the game with three each. Brayden Long, Ionelli, and Moore also had a combined 4 assists.
MVA fought for every ball with a total of 42 ground balls won. Long had a team-high six ground balls.
Goalkeeper, Sam Junkhe kept Trinity Prep at bay with 10 saves and Andrew Chehansky had two saves in the final five minutes of the game.
MVA's semifinal round game at Bishop Moore is scheduled for Monday April 14 at 6:00 pm.
