The Montverde Academy baseball team lost to John Carroll Catholic 12-2 in game one of the best of three series of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) regional quarterfinals in Fort Pierce Monday evening.
With the score tied 1-1, the host Rams exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second to break the game open. John Carroll Catholic then scored two more in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. The Eagles scored their second run of the game in the top of the fifth before the Rams scored three more in the bottom half to walk off with a mercy rule win.
Max Irving, Donati Fronduto and Joevansky Velez had one hit each (all doubles), while Velez and Pablo Borbely scored one run each.
Fronduto suffered the loss after going 1 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
MVA will look to stave off elimination on Tuesday with game two in Fort Pierce at 6:00 pm.
